| Customer Reviews: These Things Rock May 2, 2010 Bob Feeser (Springfield, PA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyhow, I guess it is because now I am older, but I don't really care for the overloaded Brrgghh Brrgghh sound, but rather the tight, deep, full, hard punching sound as it originally occurred when it was recorded. I want to feel like the drummer with the twin bass drums is punching those babies right in front of me, with all their sonic beauty, and skin rippling force. That is what these speakers have done for me.
I have 2 of these in a new Nissan Versa SL Hatchback, and when I was building this system, they all told me I was nuts to have that much power in such a small car. I mated them to Alpine MRP-M500 - Amplifier - 1-channel which is the number one sub amp in the country.
Ok, let me get back to the beginning of my journey in subbing out my car.
I am not an impulsive buyer. I research the heck out of stuff. Early on I went into my local large Best Buy store and had the salesman demo me their pre-built sub enclosures. He had a high end amp driving them all the same, and each one provided that typical Brrgghh Brrgghhh distorted, overdriven sound, and finally he came to the smaller speaker set of the pack, the pair of 10" Alpine Type E's and there it was. This great sounding tight thump, thump, accurate bass. I knew I found it. For a big open room, it still didn't totally blow me away, therefore in my mind I immediately opted for the 12's which weren't that much more. (Everything is that much more in Best Buy) Then I was told that I could talk to their installer when I had a few installation questions. So I went around back, and this guy had the big Snap On toolbox, and installs these crazy systems. I told him that I listened to everything in the store, and the Alpines blew everything else away. He replied, "That's what I have in my car". He proceeded to show me his twin 12's.
I have the gain control on the amp set at 1/4 of the way up. It is exactly the sound I am looking for. Look I understand that it is fun to go rocking the car next to you, and with sealed enclosures it will not do that, but to give up incredible power that is super clean, producing mind blowing sound quality, for the sake of being outrageous is not what I am after. If you get a ported box, that is what you will get; a sound that is designed for a large room which will spill over into the storefront, or the car next to you, or down the block for that matter. Hey if you want to have fun with that, I understand. I opted for the sealed air-tight box that gives me "tight accurate" bass. Scosche Se12 12-Inch Sealed Subwoofer Enclosure
The Type R's are available also, and they have an extended throw range speaker, but all I know is the perfect sound I was looking for I heard in that Best Buy store that day in the Alpine twin 10 inch Type E's. For the tiny bit more money gets the 12's. I found a superb deal on these through Amazon, a price that was half the price of Best Buy. Highly recommended.
